Wei Wai Kum announce construction of new hotel

Wei Wai Kum First Nation announced the construction of a new Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotel with a land blessing and groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 11.

The First Nation said a special shovel was used for the ceremony.

“The ceremonial shovel created by Master Carver Bill Henderson, first used more than 30 years ago at the original Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre groundbreaking, was used once again, connecting our past to this important moment,” said a social media post from the First Nation.

The post noted that the hotel will create jobs for people in the region and provide a boost to local tourism.

“Wei Wai Kum continues to invest in our community and create opportunities that benefit everyone, whether you live here or are visiting,” said the First Nation.

The hotel, located on the waterfront between the Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre and the Campbell River ferry terminal, will feature 140 rooms, a 10,000-square-foot spa and wellness centre and 5,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

Construction is slated to begin by next year, with the hotel expected to open in spring 2029.
