Campbell River supporting SRD grant application to assess local heat risks

Campbell River is supporting a grant application aimed at improving the region’s response to extreme heat.

City council has agreed to partner with the Strathcona Regional District on a Federation of Canadian Municipalities grant application.

If approved, the funding would support a seasonal staff position in 2027 to assess local heat risks and develop community-specific safety programs.

The position would work with community groups, seniors’ organizations and other service providers to help vulnerable residents prepare for extreme heat and access cooling resources.

The decision to support the application came at the city council meeting on Sept. 24.
