Update: Slope stabilized at Campbell River landslide site

Campbell River firefighters responded to a landslide Friday morning.

The Campbell River Fire Department was called to the area of 350 South Island Highway at about 6:06 a.m.

“Fire department personnel attended the site and assessed the situation,” said the city in a statement. “No evacuation of the building was required, and no injuries have been reported.”

The city said cleanup of the affected area is ongoing.

It added that significant progress has been made in the parking area, with most debris now removed.

The city enlisted a geotechnical engineer to assess the site and determined that the slope is stable, with no immediate risk to public safety or surrounding property.

In a statement, the city said a watermain break occurred in the area in the early morning on Oct. 2 which contributed to the slope failure. The watermain break has been repaired.

Cleanup efforts are continuing.
