Campbell River School District mourns trustee David Harper

School District 72 is mourning the passing of trustee David Harper.

The school district issued a statement that Harper died Sunday.

Harper was elected to the school board in 2022 after spending more than 30 years working in public education.

He joined SD 72 as a teacher in 1991 and retired in 2021, working at several schools in the Campbell River area through his career. Harper taught English and French Immersion, the school district said he was widely respected for his commitment to students, families and public education.

Harper also served twice as president of the Campbell River and District Teachers’ Association and was a member of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation executive committee.

School District 72 Board Chair Craig Gillis says Harper was a strong advocate for students, staff and public education, and his contributions will leave a lasting legacy.

“Dave devoted his career to supporting students, staff and public education,” said Board Chair Craig Gillis. “His contributions to our schools and community were considerable, and his passion for education will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the Board of Education, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues.”

Flags at all SD 72 schools will be lowered to half staff until Oct. 13 in honour of Harper.
