Change smoke alarm batteries when changing clocks

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-Clocks go ahead one hour this weekend, but the Campbell River Fire Department says you should be doing something else when you change the clocks as well.

That would be replacing your smoke alarm batteries.

According to Fire Prevention Canada eight people are killed in the country every week by fire, with residential fires accounting for 73 per cent of those deaths. Campbell River Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty says two-thirds of home fire deaths can be blamed on lack of working smoke alarms.

On top of changing the batteries you should also test the alarm to make sure it works and replace it immediately if it doesn’t respond properly when tested. All smoke alarms should be replaced regardless when they’re 10-years-old.
