City says Jubilee wetland restoration to pick up again after amphibian hatching period

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-The Jubilee wetland restoration is set to start back up again soon. The City of Campbell River says right now the area is going through a “sensitive amphibian hatching period.”

There are northwestern salamanders, long-toed salamanders, and Pacific chorus frogs in the wetland. When their eggs are finished hatching the water levels can be safely dropped and Parkway Properties can resume the work.

The city expects it will take more than three weeks to drain the wetland. While that’s happening biologists will salvage and re-locate amphibians to a few deep pools that will remain during the re-construction.

Machines will excavate and rebuild the wetland, replacing stockpiled peat, removing infill and creating a replacement wetland. After the restoration is complete, the control structure will help maintain water levels in the wetland.
