Final siren tests coming for Campbell River

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C- Residents of the Campbell River area may hear some odd noises in the next few days.

According to Stephen Watson, spokesperson for BC Hydro, the final testing for the new public warning system on the John Hart dam will be carried out over the next three days.

The older 360-degree air raid siren sound is getting switched out for a “whooping sound” that is more directional, with the sirens facing upstream or downstream of the canyon or river.

“We’re going to a new system that’s more reliable and a little more directional. It’s identical to the same siren system we put in place in the Puntledge River a few years ago,” Watson said, in earlier reports.

He said the goal is to provide some awareness for residents, because hikers in the area will hear a new sound, different from the previous warning system.

The system is expected to be finished off in three weeks.
