Poll another reminder for residents to be prepared

Campbell River residents seem like they’re prepared for an emergency.

That’s according to the results of a recent poll from the City of Campbell River.

The poll shows that 13% of respondents had a fire plan, 21% receive phone and email emergency alerts, 10% have an earthquake plan, and 3% have a grab and go kit among other answers.

Stephanie Bremer is the emergency program coordinator for Campbell River, and she says there was a good number of residents who participated.

While the poll was to survey who’s prepared, Bremer says it’s really a reminder.

“Doing polls such as this is just another way that we can remind people what they can do to be prepared. Sometimes just having that poll up there, it’s a visual trigger for them to remind themselves and say ‘hey, you know what, maybe my household needs to just become a little bit more prepared in case we have an emergency’,” she said.

She reminds residents that they can prepare by having an earthquake plan or a grab and go kit.

She adds it’s not just about one kind of plan or kit either.

“We try and use these polls as an opportunity to just remind people that depending on the time of year, there are multiple different types of emergencies that we can have.”

“In the forefront of everyone’s mind is always earthquake, but earthquakes aren’t necessarily always the emergency that we need to be prepared for. I mean, we do need to be prepared for flooding, we could have severe weather patterns such as storms which can knock out hydro,” she adds.

She says it’s good to have kits that can help a household get through at least 72 hours.
