Municipal funding is being doled out to the Robron fieldhouse project, along with organizations across the city.
During Monday night’s meeting, Campbell River council approved community partnership grants and authorized more funding for the fieldhouse.
All told, council approved 13 grants to community arts and culture groups in 2020 with a total value of $651,800 (2019 grants under this program totalled $634,300).
Each year, the Community Partnership Committee reviews applications to determine eligibility and provides recommendations to council based on established policy.
The city says that the grant program also sponsors several events put on by community organizations, which the city “could be expected to offer if these organizations did not exist.”
Meanwhile, council authorized an additional $500,000 grant to support the Robron fieldhouse project.
The funding will come from Community Works Funds (Federal Gas Tax rather than property taxation).
Over the past few years, the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association and council have been working on this project that would see the association build a fieldhouse on the Robron Field complex.
Once completed the fieldhouse will become a city-owned and operated facility that can be booked for a variety of events through the recreation department.
The total, the city’s contribution towards the project will be $1,242,990, and the additional funding is subject to council’s approval of a construction and donation agreement and a licence of occupation agreement between the city and the association.
