Drivers reminded to slow down as Hwy. 19A construction continues

Heads up drivers, up to 10-minute delays are expected along Highway 19A as crews continue upgrading the sewer in south Campbell River.

Construction got underway on July 19th and was anticipated to last around four weeks. But now, officials say it will likely wrap up by mid-September.

With this in mind, drivers are reminded to slow down, practicing extra caution through the work zone. Douglas Wynd, health and safety coordinator with Upland Contracting, says crews are ‘experiencing issues’ with people not following directions.

Wynd says construction along the highway – between Maryland and Twillingate – takes place Monday to Friday from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm, with temporary detours for local traffic in surrounding neighborhoods.

Between work hours, the speed limit is lowered to 30 km/hr and single-lane traffic is in effect with flaggers on-site, Wynd adds.

Sewer at maximum capacity:

Back in April, the City said the sewer in the growing Maryland-Parkway neighbourhood reached its maximum capacity. This meant a handful of people weren’t able to move into new homes in the area.

However, as plans for a sewer upgrade were released, building inspections for the houses under construction could continue and occupancy permits could be issued for six new move-in-ready homes.

The City noted that additional sewer capacity would also accommodate future homes on individual vacant single-family lots already sold in the area.
