Police are investigating vandalism and racist graffiti at the site of a new First Nations community south of Campbell River.
On June 15, police were notified of damaged construction equipment and graffiti at the construction site for the new Tlowitsis First Nations village on Henry Road.
Constable Maury Tyre says equipment including light stands and generators was damaged, and excavators had windows and glass smashed.
“The graffiti left behind was predominantly illegible, but one racist term was clearly prominent, the ‘N’ word,” he says. “Damages at the construction site are substantial and will be approximately $25,000 to repair. At this point, it’s too early in the investigation to determine whether the actions of the vandals were simply a senseless crime of opportunity or whether it was a targeted act.”
Police are now looking for help from the public in order to identify the people responsible. Anyone with information can call the RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-286-6221, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
