Independent investigation launched into Campbell River traffic fatality

The Independent Investigations Office is looking into a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning which left one woman dead.

At around 5:30 am on July 31, police received a call about a grey Subaru Outback being driven erratically northbound on the Island Highway near Perkins Road. A half-hour later police responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision involving the same vehicle in the 6400 block of Island Highway. The Outback had been travelling south when it left the road.

The female driver and sole occupant were pronounced dead at the scene.

The IIO will now determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.

Anyone with more information or video footage is asked to contact the IIO via the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is a civilian-led police oversight agency.
