Forestry companies near Campbell River were found to be operating significantly out of compliance in a recent provincial audit.
In one case, Sage Mountain Resources was found to have created a potential wildfire hazard near Camp Bob, Roberts Lake Resort and Highway 19 north of town by failing to clear slash piles for three years. The same company was also found by auditors to have three unsafe bridges in their licenced area. The company has since corrected the issues.
The BC Forest Practices Board recently audited five companies operating woodlots within 100 kilometres of Campbell River, looking at their activity from Oct. 1, 2020 to the end of October 2022. Three were found to have significant non-compliance issues.
Most of the issues identified in the audit have since been corrected by the companies.
