Pregnant women should avoid unlicenced midwives, college warns

A woman in Campbell River may be acting as an unauthorized midwife, the BC College of Nurses and Midwives warns.

The college issued an advisory this week that Annick Meckes of Campbell River may be offering midwifery services and performing activities restricted only to regulated birth attendants. Meckes has never been registered with the college and is not entitled to practice as a midwife in BC.

The college says unregistered midwives can pose a risk to pregnant mothers and their babies, because they do not have the same training or equipment. They are also not integrated with hospitals and cannot direct patients to emergency care if needed.

The college invites anyone unsure about the qualifications of a birthing attendant to verify them through their website.
