UPDATE 2024-03-05: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the location where the bylaw is being considered. We apologize for the error.
Propane cannons that scare birds away from shellfish farms are in the crosshairs of coastal North Island residents.
The Strathcona Regional District board has asked staff to report back on options to further restrict the use of bird scaring devices in Area A, which covers Kyoquot, Nootka and Sayward regions.
The board passed a similar noise bylaw for Cortes in November, which was crafted specifically to regulate the devices on shellfish farms.
