Cougar attack causes closure of Elk River Trail

The Elk River Trail in Strathcona park is closed because of a cougar attack.

The Ministry of Environment says the incident happened on Saturday, when two women were hiking with off-leash dogs near landslide lake.

A cougar attacked one of the dogs, and bit one of the women before running away after the hikers used bear spray.

They say both the hikers and dogs were taken out of the area by helicopter, where despite the attack, the woman had non-life-threatening injuries. The dog is also expected to recover.

The woman has been identified as Olivia Apps, a rugby player with Team Canada. She was treated for a minor injury and was able to return to training, according to Rugby Canada.

During the investigation, the conservation officer services found it was a defensive attack, and no further action will be taken.

Because of this attack, BC Parks has closed the trail, adding signs onto the area.
