New fencing will keep destructive geese out of new salmon habitat

Work is underway to keep an obnoxious group of vandals from damaging the Campbell River estuary.

Canada geese are not native to this region – they were introduced to Vancouver Island’s east coast in the 1950s. Since then, they have caused ongoing damage to estuaries, eating plants that provide habitat for juvenile salmon.

This week Greenways Land Trust and the Wei Wai Kum Guardians have been installing eco-cultural goose fencing in the Mill Pond area. It will protect recently transplanted eelgrass, a crucial part of intertidal habitats for salmon.

The fencing acts as a psychological barrier to the geese, protecting the eelgrass as it grows.

The work is funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund for BC.
