Motorists urged to slow down as school starts next month

Students are heading back to school and Campbell River RCMP says motorists should pay extra attention and be aware of speed limits.

RCMP say they’ll be out in full force starting Sept. 3, at several locations to make sure drivers are paying attention to their speed and making sure everyone is safe in school zones.

Constable Maury Tyre says this is a crackdown on public safety and they’re increasing numbers to increase awareness.

“Our friends with the local Citizens on Patrol will be out in force at multiple locations reminding people of speed limits in school zones,” Tyre says. “In addition, our officers will be conducting regular patrols in school zones looking for motorists who are putting children’s lives at risk by speeding and using electronic devices.”

The speed limits in school zones are currently set at 30 km/h, and Tyre says that is to make sure if a child is struck then the survival rate is higher than if it was at regular in-town speeds, but any excessive speed could be fatal.

“Even a marginal increase of 5 km/h over the speed limit could mean a pedestrian wouldn’t survive the encounter with the vehicle,” he says.
