Kraft mill demolition felt all the way in downtown Campbell River

The history of Campbell River’s kraft paper mill was over in just a few seconds this afternoon, after a controlled demolition took it down.

The explosion sent a plume of dust towards Orange Point, where residents had been warned to make sure their windows were closed during the demolition event.

Dozens of locals gathered at the lookout site just north of the old pulp and paper mill to watch the demolition at 3:30 pm. Some had been waiting for hours. Workers from the waterfront site below who had to move away for their safety had a barbecue set up to watch the show.

The demolition appeared to go off without a hitch, although the vibrations from the explosion were felt all the way downtown.

The site is owned by NTE Discovery Park Ltd, the company is currently looking at building a green energy power plant on the site.
