We Wai Kai Nation re-elects Ronnie Chickite as chief councillor

Ronnie Chickite has been re-elected as chief of the We Wai Kai First Nation by a large margin, after this week’s election.

Last night at Campbell River’s city council meeting, Mayor Kermit Dahl acknowledged Chickite’s inspiring leadership and dedication to the community, and congratulated him and all the councillors elected on January 29.

Chickite won with nearly 60% of the ballots cast for chief. The other candidates were Brian Donald Assu and Tanille Johnston, who is currently serving as a Campbell River city councillor.

Under Chickite’s leadership, the nation continues to expand its business ventures. Most recently the nation converted the old resort at Cape Mudge into the Tsakwa’lutan Healing Centre, which is currently hiring staff, and will provide treatment and recovery for up to two dozen clients when it’s open.

Along with Chickite, the nation also elected eight councillors:

  • Art Wilson
  • Cindy Inrig
  • Kim Duncan
  • Jonathan Chickite
  • Merci Brown
  • Nicole Assu
  • Samantha Chickite
  • Glenn Assu
