Fast-tracked wind farm project preps for year of exploration

A wind farm north planned north of Campbell River will be doing environmental surveys and field work this year, after being fast-tracked by the province.

Vista Radio broke the news about the project last year. Since then, the Brewster Wind Project has become one of 18 projects the provincial government recently committed to getting built as quickly as possible. It’s planned for a ridge near Sayward, and could generate enough electricity every year to power more than 56,000 homes.

The project is being developed by Capstone Energy with the Wei Wai Kum First Nation as partners. They recently signed a 30-year electricity purchase agreement with BC Hydro.

Associate project manager Chris Boulton said in a letter to the Strathcona Regional District that further clarity from the province about the regulatory process is still forthcoming, but expects to go through a thorough assessment.
