CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C.-The Campbell River Downtown Business Improvement Association says it’s pleased with the Safer Downtown plan.
That’s city hall’s initiative aimed at helping deal with the issues, like criminal activity, in the downtown, which was announced earlier this week.
The plan calls for, among other things, the opening of a new bylaw office on Shoppers Row and the hiring of a new bylaw officer to focus on the area. Lisa Whitmore, Co-Chair of the BIA, says the organization likes the direction the city is going:
The BIA unveiled its Safe Streets petition that called on the city to clean up downtown six weeks ago. Whitmore says the BIA is pleased residents have gotten behind it:
Although she believes Safer Downtown is a good first step, Whitmore says the next step is looking at the larger problem:
Whitmore added that the safety of downtown has been the BIA’s top priority for the past two years, and that the problems have gotten worse in that time.
