Healthcare career roadshow coming to the North Island

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Medical students from the Island Medical Program are coming to Campbell River, Port Hardy, and Port McNeill.

According to a release, the Healthcare Travelling Roadshow brings a multidisciplinary group of healthcare students from post-secondary institutions from across the province. The aim of the roadshow is to showcase healthcare careers to high school students in smaller communities.

Students and graduates representing medicine, nursing, physical therapy, midwifery, pharmacy, dental hygiene, respiratory therapy and cardiology technology will give hands-on representations, as well as answer questions.

The group is led by students from the University of British Columbia.

This is the first time that the healthcare career roadshow is coming to Vancouver Island, which will be in the North Island on the following days:

  • Campbell River: Monday May 6th, Timberline Secondary
  • Campbell River: Tuesday May 7th, Carihi High
  • Port McNeill: Wednesday May 8th, North Island Secondary
  • Port Hardy: Thursday May 9th, Port Hardy Secondary

The group will be in the schools in the morning, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

“The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow was born at the University of Northern British Columbia a decade ago. It has grown from a small pilot project into a significant provincial initiative to address the rural healthcare workforce,” Dr. Sean Maurice, a UNBC senior lab instructor, wrote in the release.

The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow is delivered in partnership with the University of Northern BC, UBC Faculty of Medicine, Northern Medical Programs Trust, Rural Education Action Plan, Interior Health Authority, and Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health).
