Conservative Party of B.C. candidate Anna Kindy is making health care a central issue in her bid for re-election in North Island.
Kindy is a physician and addiction medicine specialist who has worked in the region, including in Port Hardy and Campbell River.
“I understand health care,” Kindy said in a campaign video. “I’ve worked in Port Hardy’s emergency room when it was open 24-7.”
She said the emergency department at Port Hardy Hospital has been closing at 5 p.m. for more than three and a half years.
Kindy also raised concerns about long-term care in Campbell River. The provincial government announced plans for a 153-bed facility in 2023, but adjusted the project’s timeline in its February 2026 budget.
Kindy said the project was promised again during the current NDP election campaign.
She described Campbell River Hospital as operating over capacity and claimed some seniors have spent weeks or months in hospital beds or on stretchers while waiting for long-term care.
“That’s the NDP’s record on the North Island,” she said. “When you can’t run on your record, you run on fear.”
Kindy said the Conservative Party would make fully funding universal health care its first decision with every budget.
She has also emphasized improving access to health care in rural communities and addressing challenges facing local medical services.
General voting day for the provincial election is Oct. 24.
