Wildfire near Quadra Island over 30 hectares in size

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – A wildfire is raging on Read Island, just east of Quadra Island.

The Coastal Fire Service says the fire has more than tripled in size since Friday. They say the fire was caused by lightning.

The area is remote, which has made it difficult for crews to get there and extinguish the fire. There are also steep slopes and big trees, making the area hard to access.

According to the fire service, it is now 34 hectares in size, but that number may change.

As of Sunday morning, there were 29 fire crews and six helicopters working to get the fire under control.

The fire is not a threat to buildings or residents, as it is burning towards the east and is in an isolated part of the island.
