The Wounded Warrior Run is just around the corner.
The annual run covers the length of the island, and raises funds and awareness for first responders and military veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress.
Wounded Warriors Canada honours Canada’s ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, first responders and their families through programs, it says, enables it “to carry out the guiding ethos: Honour the Fallen, Help the Living.”
The 600-kilometre run is held from Feb. 22 to March 1, starting in Port Hardy and ending in Victoria.
The runners will arrive in Campbell River on Feb. 25 and will continue their journey south on Feb. 26.
Last year’s run raised $125,000 toward the core eight programs offered by Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC).
The programming helps ill and injured veterans, first responders and their families and is fully funded and accessible to service members on Vancouver Island, including the Trauma Resiliency Program (TRP), Couples Overcoming PTSD Everyday (COPE) and Before Operational Stress (BOS).
This year it’s added the Warrior Kids Program.
The team has set a goal of raising $250,000 this year.
“In addition to raising funds, we are eager and excited to raise awareness for the WWC core programs as we visit each community during the February events,” Zweng said in a letter to Campbell River Mayor Andy Adams and council.
“We have increased time in each location to provide more education and reach more people.”
