Social distancing could have prevented disturbance: Campbell River RCMP

The Campbell River RCMP is investigating an early morning fight.

Police were called to the 7-Eleven parking lot on Dogwood Street at 2:10am today.

Constable Maury Tyre says approximately 13 people were “fully involved in a physical altercation.”

“If people had been following social distancing protocols, the event simply wouldn’t have happened,” Tyre says.

He says a group of adults and a group of youths had been “partying” in different places.

Both groups ended up in the parking lot at the same time and somehow a fight started.

“The first issue is that people saw fit to disobey social distancing protocols so they could party together,” Tyre says. “The second is that many of the individuals involved were underage and there was clearly alcohol involved. Third, this occurred after 2:00am.”

He says typically people don’t need to be out after 2:00am and usually nothing positive happens after this time.

The only upside police found was that “both groups seemed to have designated drivers.”

“However, in one car were members from four different households who will now be sharing germs with their respective homes,” Tyre says.

Tyre recognizes that you may be “a little lonely” during COVID-19 times, “but going out to hang with your besties or drinking buddies is totally contrary to what we as a community are being asked to do. Especially when people travel together in confined spaces.”

At this time, the Campbell River RCMP is asking for your cooperation in following BC Public Health protocols.

“Guardians are needed to guide the youths in their homes through these difficult times and adults who should know better, please just stay home,” Tyre adds.
