Meeting for a cleaner, safer Campbell River set for tomorrow

Campbell River city councillors are holding a special meeting tomorrow to discuss downtown concerns.

The meeting will be held virtually from 1:00pm to 5:00pm through video calling.

This comes after businesses surveyed said they feel the area is unsafe, and the alleys are filthy.

“We want to stress this is a listening opportunity for council,” says councillor Charlie Cornfield.

“It will help expand on information from the RCMP, our bylaw officers, downtown surveys, and our safety committee. What we hear will help inform future decisions on how best to help.”

A survey conducted in June by the Downtown Business Association was aimed to take the pulse of downtown businesses, including how businesses were coping with reopening.

The BIA says survey results found “lanes and alleys are filthy with needles, litter and human waste.”

When asked if they thought the area is safe, it added “only seven businesses, said unequivocally, downtown was safe.”

You can watch the virtual meeting at 1:00pm tomorrow on the city’s website.
