Campbell River’s safety select committee aims to improve downtown core

With the application deadline now past, the City of Campbell River’s downtown safety select committee is moving forward.

Council confirmed plans to appoint seven voting members to the committee, with one member of council, a bylaw enforcement officer and the RCMP Inspector as non-voting members.

The committee will engage with representatives of downtown facilities and organizations over a four-month term.

“Council is anticipating that this select group will be able to provide recommendations that will provide for some immediate improvement in the downtown safety situation, and real clarity in terms of how to spend the $225,000 that is set aside for downtown safety improvement,” says city manager Deborah Sargent.

Ben Lanyon, Brett Giese, Rodney Semkiw, Heather Gordon-Murphy, Patty Webster, Jonathan Shead and Dan Samson have been appointed to the committee. They’ll be joined by council liaison Ron Kerr.

The City is working to schedule the committee’s first meeting for sometime this month.

In an effort to discourage what the City calls “negative behaviour” away from the area, it’s also offering downtown property owners funding to support building design and storefront changes.

In partnership with the Downtown BIA, Campbell River’s revised Downtown Revitalization Program is offering matching grants for assessments and modifications based on crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) principles. For more details, click here.
