Hundreds of new homes coming to north Campbell River

Campbell River council is giving the go-ahead for a new residential neighbourhood north of town and Race Point, near Ripple Rock.

‘Ripple Rock Estates’ will see hundreds of new homes, with views of Ripple Rock and Seymour Narrows. However, it won’t just be a residential development, as plans for a new hotel and commercial spaces have also been approved for the area.

Mayor Andy Adams says the development permit was approved at council’s meeting this past Monday (May 10th).

“This development at 6805 Island Highway north of town will provide a new low-density residential Strata development,” Adams tells Vista Radio.

“It will have 200 lots with water views and public access to the waterfront. Plans also include for a hotel and commercial use within walking distance of the houses.”

City manager Deborah Sargent tells us the city is now seeing a wide range of new housing development proposals: “In addition to that [Ripple Rock Estates], we had two public hearings on Monday night.”

“Those were both for multi-family development proposals,” she says. “Of the applications – the first was for Habitat for Humanity… so a rezoning proposal for 20 new units on Hilchey Road. The second one was a 70-unit apartment block along the waterfront highway.”

Sargent adds these proposals will be considered by council – following public hearings – at their next meeting, set for May 31st.
