Ready, set, decorate: Campbell River Gingerbread House Competition returns

The holiday season is in full swing in Campbell River. The Gingerbread House Competition is back for another year and locals are invited to participate.

The city’s Recreation and Culture Department, together with the Downtown BIA and Tidemark Theatre, is gearing up to host the annual event.

According to organizers, entries will be accepted in either the adult, child or family categories. They say gingerbread structures can take a variety of shapes and sizes and don’t necessarily need to be houses.

And while there’s no cost to enter, registration is required. Until Tuesday (Nov. 23), locals can sign up online or register in person at the Community Centre or Sportsplex.

Once registered, entries can be dropped off at the Tidemark Theatre next week, on Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm or on Friday from noon to 2 pm. The Community Centre is also accepting entries on Thursday from 5 pm to 6 pm.

For recreation programmer Karen Chappell, it’s “always a pleasure” to showcase the work of gingerbread artists who enter the competition.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what incredible, edible artwork competitors have in store for us this year,” she says.

Entries will then be displayed at the Tidemark Theatre for the public to vote between Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 from noon to 4 pm, and on Dec. 3 from noon to 7 pm. COVID-19 protocols will be in place.

On Dec. 6, the winners will be contacted, with prize baskets awarded for each category. The following day, competitors will be able to take their gingerbread houses home.
