Beech Street mixed-use building and revitalization plans get parked

A mixed-use residential and commercial building planned to kick-start revitalization efforts on Beech Street is no longer happening.

The city has been planning a series of downtown upgrades and improvements along Beech Street for several years, working with a private developer who intended to build on the parking lot behind Service Canada. However, the development is no longer going ahead, and the city is parking its own plans to improve the street.

While that means improvements to water mains, sidewalks and crosswalks in the area are on hold, it also means the 70 free parking spots will remain for downtown shoppers and employees.

The street upgrades were originally planned for last summer but were postponed. They remain part of the city’s long-term downtown improvement plans, but do not have a timeline.

More details are available on the city’s website.
