Cortes Island wetland under school field to be restored

The Strathcona Regional District has received more than $800,000 in funding to support six climate-friendly projects.

That includes several on Cortes Island. The school’s sports field was originally built on top of a wetland. The funding will help restore the wetlands, improving habitat and also reducing flooding on the sports field.

Also on Cortes, earlier this year the regional district installed four water tanks for firefighting use. The new funding will pay for murals on the tank which signify adapting successfully to a changing climate to inspire ingenuity, conversation and hope.

In Campbell River, the funding will help the ongoing Willow Creek Restoration Project, working with the Homalco First Nation.

The funding will also help the district hire a regional Community Disaster Awareness Consultant, to strengthen regional emergency programs.
