Village of Sayward asks residents to conserve water

The Village of Sayward has issued a water conservation notice following heavy rain over the last 24 hours.

The municipality said in a news release Jan. 30 that heavy rain has washed fine materials from the Newcastle landslide area into Newcastle Creek, increasing turbidity.

Due to current conditions, Sayward’s water treatment plant is offline until turbidity levels drop to a point where drinking-water production can resume.

“While the Water Treatment Plant is offline, we need everyone in Sayward to conserve water by limiting water usage to essentials only, e.g. water to drink,” said a release from the municipality. “We expect this situation to be short-term and hope to have the water treatment plant running again within 24-36 hours.”

At 11 a.m. on Jan. 30, Sayward’s water reservoir was around 80 per cent full.
