North Island communities are holding events May 5 to mark Red Dress Day.

Red Dress Day is recognized each year as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit+ people.

In Campbell River, a gathering will be held at Spirit Square from 11:10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

More information about the Campbell River event is available online.

Meanwhile, a march and barbecue will take place in Port Hardy on Tuesday starting at North Island Building Blocks at 1:30 p.m.

Organizers encourage participants to wear red if possible.

More information about the Port Hardy event is available online.

The events aim to raise awareness of the systemic discrimination and violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit+ people, honour loved ones who have been lost and support survivors and their families.
