City of Campbell River announces enhancements to Nunns Creek Park

Nunns Creek Park will get a boost to provide long-term recreation and community sports to Campbell River, but it will carry a significant price tag.

According to council, the project will give the park several improvements including a slo-pitch facility, two soccer fields, expanded parking, event space and areas for food trucks and kiosks.

The contract was awarded by city council, but in a finance update the city said the budget had to be increased to accommodate increased construction costs.

“Additional project funding was approved to allow the redevelopment to proceed despite increased construction costs,” the city said. “The total budget was increased to approximately $8.57 million and will remain largely funded through external grants.”

Funding comes from the Growing Communities Fund ($6.4 million) and the Build Communities Strong Fund ($1.635 million).

Construction on the facility is expected to start this year, and the city said it’ll give residents across Campbell River, community sports organizations and visitors access to long-term recreational benefits well into the future.
