Campbell River city council has adopted a new Official Community Plan after giving it third and final reading at its meeting Thursday.
The city said the OCP will establish a modern, legislatively compliant and community-informed framework to guide Campbell River’s growth over the next 20 years.
The city highlighted the following plan priorities in a news release:
- Promoting greater infill development by directing higher-density development along the Dogwood Street corridor, in Quinsam Heights, downtown and within existing neighbourhood centres such as Willow Point and Campbellton.
- Advancing the Campbell River airport lands as a regionally significant employment area by supporting aviation-related light industrial and commercial uses.
- Supporting a range of housing types to meet the needs of a growing population, particularly families, seniors and vulnerable residents.
- Supporting investment in the city’s transportation network, particularly in higher-growth areas such as Quinsam Heights, for all road users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
- Supporting the city’s resource-based economy while encouraging economic diversification.
- Promoting the management of natural areas by balancing conservation with responsible development.
The city said the OCP was developed through a community-driven process and reflects community input and priorities.
“Replacing the previous OCP that was adopted in 2012, the new plan is the community’s strategic vision for the future, guiding the amenities that the City provides, how neighbourhoods are designed, how people move around the community and how land is used,” said the release.
