School District 72 is warning the public about unauthorized fundraising for Carihi Secondary School in Campbell River.
The school district said people have been going door-to-door seeking donations and claiming the money would pay for repairs following a fire at the school in 2024.
Neither the school nor the district has authorized anyone to collect donations on the school’s behalf, and the district is not running a public fundraising campaign for fire-related repairs.
“While the community’s support for Carihi Secondary and its recovery has been greatly appreciated, this fundraising activity is not authorized by the school or School District 72,” the school district said in a news release. “The district is not conducting any public fundraising campaign for fire-related repairs, and no individuals have been authorized to collect donations on the school’s behalf.”
The school district is encouraging anyone approached about a fundraiser connected to a school in the district to contact the school office to verify that it is legitimate.
“If you are approached to support a fundraiser connected to a School District 72 school, we encourage you to ask for information from the school and, when in doubt, contact the school office directly to verify that the fundraising activity is legitimate and approved,” the school district said.
