Campbell River DJ in Top 16 to be Maxim cover girl

CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Local DJ Kristy Watkins is pursuing her dreams.

Besides working as a DJ in and around the city, the Campbell River resident has also been modelling for various fashion outlets, including Ragdolz.

And now, she’s in the Top 16, running to be Maxim’s 2019 covergirl.

She said it’s been a wild ride.

“In the modelling world, you submit and submit (portfolios), but you never think that anything’s really going to transpire – just get your name out there and keep going. And I received notification over the weekend that I had made it to the Top 16,” she said.

“I was quite blown away.”

Maxim is an international men’s magazine first launched in the UK in 1995. The magazine is known for photographing prominent actresses, singers, and models.

Watkins said that more than anything, she’s excited about the opportunity to get Campbell River – and Vancouver Island – on the map.

“I would love to put Campbell River on the map. Making Campbell River the face of that magazine would just be amazing.”

Currently, there are 16 finalists, with Watkins coming in at fifth place. The contest is voting-based, with votes boosting a contestant’s ranking.

If Watkins gets enough votes, she’ll make it past this round and into the Top 10. Voting for this period will end on Thursday May 16th.
