City asks locals to prepare for heavy rainfall

With heavy rain in the forecast, the City of Campbell River is asking locals to help prevent localized flooding in their neighbourhood.

A rainfall warning is currently in effect for communities on east Vancouver Island, including Courtenay to Campbell River. Environment Canada says impacted areas could see anywhere from 50 to 80 mm of rainfall.

That said, city officials encourage residents to clean leaves from catch basins grates close to their homes. “If there’s a culvert near your property, please monitor to make sure it’s clear of debris,” the City says.

It’s also important to inspect roof gutters, downspouts, and groundwater sump pumps to make sure they aren’t connected to the sanitary sewer system. If they are, locals should have them disconnected and rather direct downspouts into storm systems or rain barrels, or onto lawns or garden beds.
