SD72 submits $5.39M request to Ministry of Education and Child Care for 2026–27 projects

School District 72 is requesting $5.39 million from the Ministry of Education and Child Care to support its minor capital plan application and several upcoming projects for 2026–27.

A motion was passed for the request during a board meeting on Sept. 23.

According to the district, the projects include heating and ventilation upgrades at Southgate Middle School and Cortes Island School; a boiler replacement at Timberline Secondary; playground replacements at Ocean Grove and Ripple Rock elementary schools; roofing upgrades at Robron Centre and Southgate Middle School; the replacement of a dust extraction system in the Carihi Secondary woodshop; electrical replacement at Robron Centre; and the conversion of a set of washrooms to a universal design at Carihi Secondary.

“It was a request from our student advisory committee that we re-evaluate our washrooms… and student safety in those washrooms,” said chairperson Kat Eddy. “I just wanted to highlight that it is on our request, so we can address that in the short term.”
