Campbell River City Council is preparing to respond to changes outlined in the province’s 2026 budget.
Council directed staff at last week’s meeting to prepare draft resolutions for consideration and possible submission to the Union of BC Municipalities regarding the budget.
The city said the province’s budget introduces changes to property taxes that will affect local taxpayers and municipal finances starting this year and in 2027.
These include higher interest rates on deferred property taxes for residents beginning this year. In 2027, the province will eliminate the northern and rural homeowner benefit and increase school tax rates for higher-valued homes.
“For the City, the primary impact is the expansion of PST to professional services in October 2026, which is expected to increase operating and project costs and will be reflected in future budgets,” reads a statement from the City of Campbell River.
City staff will also provide information to residents to help them understand the changes while monitoring how the province implements them.
