City of Campbell River announces expansion of local boat ramp

The City of Campbell River has announced plans to expand the Big Rock Boat Ramp on Island Highway South.

The announcement follows the city’s acquisition of 1021 Island Highway South, providing the space needed for the project to move forward.

According to a news release, the expansion will improve parking and traffic circulation for the heavily used public amenity.

The property purchase and expansion project are part of the city’s waterfront property acquisition strategy, which focuses on increasing waterfront parkland and recreational opportunities for Campbell River residents.

“On behalf of council, I am thrilled to add another piece to the waterfront puzzle,” Mayor Kermit Dahl said. “The purchase of 1021 Island Highway South, adjacent to Big Rock Boat Ramp, isn’t just about improving parking and access. It’s about making sure the Campbell River waterfront continues to be a place where folks can gather, launch a boat or simply enjoy the view.”

The city says the project will include demolishing the existing building, regrading and reconfiguring the site for parking improvements, and adding additional boat ramp amenities.

“This strategic waterfront acquisition strengthens the city’s commitment to enhancing public access to the shoreline and improving recreational infrastructure,” city manager Elle Brovold said. “As the Salmon Capital of the World, the waterfront is central to our community’s identity, and this purchase supports our long-term vision of a vibrant, accessible and well-connected shoreline for residents and visitors alike.”

A request for proposals for demolition of the existing building will be issued in the coming months.
