The City of Campbell River is backing a new nightly meal program at the Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope.
The initiative, in partnership with the Salvation Army and Laichwiltach Family Life Society, will add regular evening dinners to existing meal services.
The program will replace the temporary take-away service introduced after the closure of the Hem’eaelas Community Kitchen.
Chief administrative officer Elle Brovold said the move is part of a broader effort to improve food security, supported by a four-year funding agreement.
“Salvation Army is busy getting to work on the logistics and staffing, and getting ready to open the doors,” said Brovold. “We’re hopeful to be open shortly. In the meantime, the city would encourage anyone who wants to donate either funding, food or volunteer efforts to contact the Salvation Army.”
Mayor Kermit Dahl said the program will provide a safe, indoor place for people to enjoy a hot meal while helping to keep public spaces clean and welcoming.
“This program reflects months of dedicated behind-the-scenes work by city staff and community partners and allows us to respond in a meaningful way to the complex challenges that matter deeply to residents,” said Dahl.
The new program is expected to launch once staffing and logistics are in place.
