Joëlle Samson running for city council in Campbell River

A former Vancouver Island Regional Library manager is seeking a seat on Campbell River city council in next month’s municipal election.

Joëlle Samson said one of the reasons she is running is because Campbell River is where she wants to raise her children.

“I love Campbell River,” said Samson. “I think that the decisions made around city council need to reflect the values of people who live in Campbell River, which includes the love of nature and the love of each other and community.”

Samson said the current council has transparency challenges.

“There’s been a lot of in camera meetings,” explained Samson. “You have to apply to talk to council, which has always been the case, but it is a difficult application and it does set a barrier.”

She said she wants to provide functional public spaces for the community and believes in open communication and transparency.

“Housing and affordability is a huge thing. People are being squeezed, and I want to look at local solutions to those problems,” she said. “We can definitely do more in that area.”

The municipal election is Oct. 17.
