Laird Ruehlen running for city council in Campbell River

A retired principal who previously served two terms on Campbell River city council is looking to get back into politics.

Laird Ruehlen, a five-decade long resident of Campbell River, said he’s excited to run for council again after serving two consecutive terms prior to the 2022 election.

Ruehlen recently retired as the principal of Timberline Secondary school and has completed a career in education spanning 30 years.

He said the city should prioritize all its resources and continuing to work well alongside all its partner groups and expressed the need for more public input opportunities.

“There is room for improvement with opportunities for the public to give input to council,” Ruehlen said. “When I was on city council, we had a variety of advisory committees and commissions that were giving council excellent input and advice. Those committees and commissions no longer exist and I feel strongly that they need to be brought back.”

He said that if elected, he would also prioritize the downtown core and maintaining infrastructure.

“We are seeing a huge need for maintaining and upgrading some of our road networks,” said Ruehlen.

The municipal election is Oct. 17. Keep visiting My Campbell River Now for information on other local candidates.
