The χʷɛmaɬkʷu (Homalco First Nation), Strathcona Regional District, Greenways Land Trust and the Nature Trust of B.C. are inviting volunteers to help plant native species along Willow Creek.
Homalco Chief Darren Blaney said the First Nation, as stewards of their lands, has made stream and wetland restoration a priority.
“These lands and waters are in the Willow Creek watershed which we share with our neighbours,” said Blaney. “The name of our project is yiyχmɛštəm qʷaqʷtəm, which means we will take care of the creek.”
The regional district said the area of focus is located near Martin Road below the bridge where there are wooden fences.
SRD chair Mark Baker said when the community works together it can benefit future generations.
“Planting native species has tremendous benefits such as supporting soil microbial systems, local pollinators and wildlife,” said Baker.
The SRD said the plants and supplies for this project are made possible through B.C. Hydro’s community regreening grant funding stream.
Planting takes place Tuesday Oct. 27 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 pm. Tools and gardening gloves will be available on site, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own.
