New Quadra Island recycling depot to open May 30

The Quadra Island recycling depot is moving to a new location on Industrial Way and will open to the public on May 30.

The move is part of the island’s transition toward the Recycle BC program.

Comox Strathcona Waste Management said the official onboarding of the depot as a Recycle BC-supported facility has been delayed until October.

CSWM said the delay is due to a provincewide transportation request-for-proposals process that will determine which company will move recycling off the island.

In a news release, the waste management service outlined several updates coming to the new location.

“The new depot will have an operator on-site during business hours who will be available to help reduce contamination rates of the existing mixed recycling bins and to help residents learn about what will be accepted once the full transition to a Recycle BC supported depot occurs,” said CSWM.

Until the transition to the new program is complete, the existing mixed recycling bins and additional fibre (cardboard) bins will be moved to the new location.

Recycle BC pop-up events have also been scheduled for selected materials.

Operating hours at the new depot will be Friday to Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., including statutory holidays.
