Campbell River council reviews bike safety on Hilchey Road

City council is moving forward with plans to upgrade bike lanes on Hilchey Road in Campbell River.

According to council, $750,000 has been allocated for the new bikeway in the neighbourhood. After a full safety review earlier this year, council decided to support changes aimed at improving safety for all road users.

The changes include removing the existing bike lanes on Hilchey Road to make room for two travel lanes and parking lanes, adding a two-way cycling path beside the sidewalk between Penfield Road and South Dogwood Street, and installing flashing lights at the existing crosswalk at Hilchey Road and Fern Drive.

Council said staff will also address other safety concerns in the area.

“In addition, staff have been directed to address broader safety concerns on Hilchey Road, provide a more comfortable cycling route and respond to concerns raised by the Penfield School community,” council said.

Funding for the project is expected to come from the current cycling infrastructure fund, including the Community Works Fund and the carbon neutral reserve.

A detailed design is currently underway and council expects construction to begin later in the summer.
